Born on the Moon Colony near Lake Sloane, young James Conrad enjoyed a life of happiness as the youngest of three children born to Mr. Stuart Conrad III and Mrs. Heather Conrad. At a young age, James Conrad was a particularly sickly child and he was diagnosed with a multitude of diseases, ranging everything from cases of double pneumonia to mycoplasma to bronchitis. His troubled health meant most of his social activities had to be both limited and closely monitored. His parents, being constantly worried for his health, made sure that his few activities that he participated in were intellectual in nature, preferring the safety of chess club to the rigors of the school's baseball or rugby or soccer teams.
While this went on through his younger developing life, by the time James hit puberty and began to really grow, his desire to be more "normal" and physical increased as expected. He joined his school's tennis team, his parents strictly objecting to anything more violent, such as rugby, football, hockey, or the like. James threw himself into the sport like there was no tomorrow and quickly became the captain of his tennis team.
When the time came for Conrad to go on beyond his normal education and enter a higher educational institution, he really had two choices. His high grades from his studious lifestyle gave him a choice at many Ivy League private institutions. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and several others had seats with the Conrad name all over it. He chose however, the darkhorse of Starfleet Academy. His parents immediately objected, wanting to keep him safe from the harsh life of a Starfleet Officer. As a reaction to this final and rather annoying mother hen attitude that James had accepted all of his life, James enrolled in the most challenging of all courses in the Academy, both mentally and physically. He went for Command.
His Academy life wasn't anything spectacular, and he originally almost bombed his sophomore year. His father died that year and by the time he made it back from San Francisco to the moon, his father had allready passed away. He never really got to say goodbye. He blamed himself and his grades dropped as he went into a sullen depression. His melancholy attitude attracted the attention of several professors there who were all set to weed out potential commanders. Starfleet didn't need people who would crumple under emotional or mental crisis. One professor, Commodore Ira Langely, saw what was going on and did his best to get James back onto the right track to pass the Command courses at the Academy. After coming out of the slump with the help of his newfound friend, Professor Langely, he went on to salvage his sophomore year.
His final two years at the academy ended in good standing and he was given a commission as a flight control officer aboard the USS Maine, an Excelsior class ship. It was there that he met the woman who became his first wife. A young idealistic diplomatic officer named Amber Calloway. After a courtship of four months they decided on marriage, and the two were wed. After the wedding, they were scheduled to be transferred to the USS Cunningham, an Ambassador class ship scheduled for opening communications with the Cardassian Union after the disastrous first contact and ensuing Cardassian Wars. Amber had gone on ahead to the Cunningham, waiting for James to square a few last minute details aboard the Maine when the Cunningham's schedule was moved up. James was left behind aboard the Maine, but was certain that he'd be joining his bride soon. It was not meant to be however, as the Cunningham was attacked by a group of Cardassian ships. The Cunningham was lost with all hands. James never forgave the Cardassians.
His second assignment was aboard the USS Atlas, a Nebula class cruiser. He served with moderate distinction as a second officer and helmsman. His navigational skills worked very well with the science missions that the Atlas was continually assigned to. His commanding and first officers were both impressed with his navigational skills, always managing to get them just that much closer to whatever anomaly or phenomenon they were investigating and was able to take the ship out of harm's way on several occasions. It was in his time aboard the USS Atlas that James began to take an interest in tactical combat, having to take over the bridge as Second Officer on a number of occasions. He found that he seemed to have a natural affinity towards tactical thinking. After serving for three years aboard the USS Atlas, James was transferred to Starbase 157 as an Executive Officer.
Starbase 157 is the Starbase in orbit around Andor, the gas giant. Mostly used as a mining station for the gases present in Andor's atmosphere. The posting was a quiet one throughout the later 2360's. He served aboard the Starbase until 2369 when the Executive Officer position opened aboard the Galaxy class USS Vicksburg.
It was aboard the Vicksburg that he made a deep and dear friend in Lieutenant Mackenzie Hunter. The same age as James, similar in every fashion, the Chief of Security was a long time compassionate friend when James needed one most, throughout the years of the Dominion War. The two became inseparable and along with the commanding officer, Captain Ronald Taggart, were a formidable force in several engagements of the Dominion War, including the Battle to retake Deep Space Nine. James and Mack both found themselves experiencing combat against the Dominion both from the bridge of the Vicksburg to the various away missions, liberating planets like Tarsus Prime, Callodius, and even participating in the mission on the ground to liberate Betazed. After the Dominion War, James stayed aboard the Vicksburg for another seven years until 2383. It was then that he was granted his own command, the Sabre class USS Katana.
The farewell was a tearful one. Mack and Ron had barely wanted to let James go, and if James wasn't set on gaining his own command, he'd have been content to stay as the First Officer of the Vicksburg. Promotion called him though, and the Katana proved to be quite the tough little ship for James and his crew, leading them through several perilous missions. His Command qualifications quickly earned him a promotion to Captain after only a few scant months in command of the Katana. It was aboard the USS Katana that James met his second wife, Megan Andrews. Together they had a son, Stuart.
In 2383, Conrad had crossed a very dangerous and very psychotic Cardassian named Padrim Nevek, the Governor of Cardassia Four. After exposing the Governor in a plot to destabilize Bajoran - Federation relations, Gul Nevek fled with a large number of the Cardassian military that served as his followers. When Nevek resurfaced in 2384 as the force behind the Kzinti invasion of Pentarus II, a remote Federation colony on the outskirts of Federation space, Conrad was called up to take command of a Task Force to stop him. To lead the Task Force, James was given temporary command of the USS Lancelot.
The Battle for Pentarus II was a victory for the Federation, and the Lancelot became the permanent command of Captain Conrad who was promoted to Rear Admiral and made a Task Force Commanding Officer in Obsidian Fleet's Task Force 47 for his excellent service in leading the fleet action in battle. In late 2384, tragedy struck as an energy being bent on pure malice and fear, invaded the USS Lancelot and murdered James' wife, making him deal with the stress of leading his Task Force and raising his son alone.
