=======Physical Description========
Mara isn’t particularly tall or incredibly short, but her posture is good and she makes the most of her inches without resorting to tricks like platform boots. She cares enough about her appearance to take meticulous care of her hair, but not enough to regularly wear any kind of makeup or jewelry. Her uniform is always ‘tidy enough’. Her hair almost defies regulations in it’s thick mass of ringlets, but all she can do is shrug and say she has little enough control over it with all her efforts! She is, of course, entirely unwilling to trim it close enough to make it entirely ‘professional’.

Off-duty, she always looks classy but casual in either jeans or a long skirt and a variety of pretty jersey shirts, often with lace or sparkles on them. She does have a variety of jewelry and skill with makeup, neither of which she uses on-duty.

=======Psychological Profile========
Though Mara is not used to being around people, she’s had enough good experiences to be timid but not unfriendly around new faces. She’s a hard worker with a pleasant demeanor and a can-do attitude, but she still deals with nightmares and occasional flashbacks. Luckily, her duties generally do not suffer as a result.

She’s currently under special watch by Starfleet’s psychology department with a notation in her record, due to her inability to handle her first combat situation.

=======Abilities and Hobbies=======
Mara is especially gifted in working with computers and has particularly high skill in algorithms and information security. She also has a decently solid knowledge of electronics, and some small skill (mostly learned through the electronics) in electrical wiring.

As part of growing up on small, tech-limited colonies, she also knows the basics of wilderness survival, such as how to tie a rope, make a shelter, swim, and navigate using the position of the sun(s) and/or stars. She has basic phaser training, but she’s not a fighter.

Mara’s hobbies are miniatures, sewing, and hang gliding.

=======Biography======
Mara was born on a relatively quiet homestead, and was raised well by two loving parents. When she was so young she could barely remember, her older brother left to join Starfleet and fight in the Dominion War. Her parents thought that this was the only way the war would affect them. However, when she was only six years old, the small but rich colony was invaded by Cardassians. Her parents were both killed in front of her as she hid and remained undetected. Afterwards, she was never sure if she was not found, or simply not considered enough of a threat. She remained in her hiding place for hours, as Starfleet responded to the colony’s distress signal and engaged in a small skirmish, and only exited when a couple of friendly-voiced Marines slowly coaxed her out with promises of safety.

At first it seemed that she would have to leave her home and enter the Federation’s orphanage system. Luckily, her older brother had just returned from his tour of duty in the War and readily took her under his wing. That started out well, but he carried many emotional scars from wartime. At first, having a young charge kept him sane and responsible. Over a few years, however, his condition declined until he was drawn into substance abuse and became physically and emotionally abusive.

Luckily, this was one case where the Federation system worked exactly as it was supposed to. A teacher noticed Mara’s increasingly withdrawn behavior and investigated, discovering the marks of abuse. She took the girl home with her and contacted the authorities, who surrounded the homestead and took her brother safely to a special facility where he could receive treatment for his troubled state. Mara, meanwhile, was taken through a medical and psychological examination and sent to foster parents who had trained specifically to deal with victims of abuse. It was during that time that she, as part of her personal healing process, chose to be called by her middle name rather than her first, which she has not used for anything beyond official business since.

Her foster parents, who eventually adopted her, lived on a pretty agricultural colony, up in the mountains. They worked with her, not pushing too fast, dealing with her outbursts and nightmares with infinite patience. When she showed a distinct reluctance to let go of childhood toys, her father helped her learn how to make them, fueling a love of miniatures that she carries to this day. Her mother taught her some simple housekeeping skills, as lower energy levels in the colony led to more work done by hand or by more primitive machinery. They did their best to give her a good education, teaching her at home when she felt she could not handle the social atmosphere in the local school. As her interest grew in computers and electronics, they hired a tutor when her knowledge quickly surpassed theirs and gave her plenty of opportunity to acquire materials to practice with. Her social options limited throughout her childhood, at first by chance and then by choice, she had plenty of time to focus on her learning and quickly showed a dedicated brilliance with algorithms and reverse-engineering in software.

Mara decided that she wanted to enter Starfleet, more than half because she was impressed with the ready and capable way they’d taken care of her and her brother. At first her adopted parents worried about her ability to cope with the decidedly more social and intense atmosphere at the Academy, but her roommates were carefully selected by the Federation psych department, which had never forgotten her. She found herself drawn out of her shell by their easy-going friendliness and had a positive experience. It wasn’t long before her aptitude with computers was discovered, and she was encouraged to take a track in computer hardware and software. Though she could have continued on the Engineering track, she decided that she preferred using her organizational ability to trying to learn about engines and other things she’d never been exposed to, and shifted into Operations.

She graduated just short of Honors, her grades in the “humanities” mostly pulling down the B’s she got in Operations-level courses and the A’s she always earned in computer-related classes. Her first assignment was on the USS Calypso, where she served well until she lapsed into complete hysteria in her first real battle situation and had to be sedated and carried to safety. Now that she has passed her psych test, she’s back on duty and ready to try again…
