Race has an angular face with distinguished, chiseled features: a square jaw, firm chin, and high cheekbones. His blond, straight hair is kept closely cropped. He has a light olive complexion that bronzes quickly in the sun and he has a lean, very well-defined build from an extremely active lifestyle. He has a tattoo on his left hip that says "Godspeed" and another tattoo on his upper right arm of a dragon.

Personality
He was hyperactive and known as "a handful" in his youth, which is something he hasn't completely outgrown, but he did calm down a great deal after the death of his father and even became a bit withdrawn. His adventurous and daring personality eventually began to resurface and at the Academy he began to take advantage of the fact that women seemed to be attracted to his quiet charm.

Race is not very outgoing at all, but he's not a recluse either and in a social setting he can get along fairly well with people. Despite his brazen, intense presence, he's usually fairly quiet. Many, especially new subordinates, get the impression that he's arrogant, but he's actually extremely critical of himself. Regardless of the unruliness of his past, superiors have taken note of his talent and have taken him under their wings. For the most part, he's a good officer, and he's an excellent engineer.
 
Background
Born Raleigh Grayson Castle into a loving family in the region of Montana in North America, Race was always an active and somewhat spoiled boy (an only child). His parents were James and Moira Castle. His father was an expeditionary guide, the ultimate outdoorsman, and his mother was a botanist. A trip to Vulcan and a terrorist attack on their transport left Race fatherless at the age of twelve, and he still blames himself for being unable to prevent it. His mother, thankfully, had remained on Earth. Even though he was devastated by it, he put up a front for her sake. He stayed involved and active, and he had always been a bright student, if a bit difficult to handle.

He graduated high school as his class's valedictorian and was accepted to Starfleet Academy. It wasn't something his mother wanted for him, but he always carried what happened to his father with him and decided that he was never going to be powerless again. As a freshman, he posted high scores in tactical, security, and engineering. His original intentions had been to become a security officer, but he found a true interest in engineering and his lower-level engineering instructor encouraged him to pursue it. By his sophomore year he had decided on ship design as his major field of study with a minor in weapons & systems engineering.

It took him some time to adjust to the structured, disciplined lifestyle at the Academy, but he remained diligent and involved and was a respected cadet. He graduated in the top ten percent of his class and his first assignment was aboard the Sovereign-class USS Armstrong as a damage control specialist and he served there for three years before he was promoted to assistant chief engineer. He served on the Armstrong for four years total. A number of commendations earned him a position as a designer at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards where he mostly assisted with flight tests for a number of Starfleet's prototype systems.

He benefitted from his time at Utopia, but he was ready to get back to a frontline starship and he put in a request for a transfer. He was recently rewarded with a prominent assignment to the Excalibur-class USS Lancelot as the ship's chief engineer.
